CMS & 7th grade Exploratory Course Teachers Recognized with Innovation in Education Award at WCNY Studios CMS & 7th grade Exploratory Course Teachers Recognized with Innovation in Education Award at WCNY Studios: Congratulations to our 7th grade Exploratory Course Teachers and Middle School for being recognized for the Innovation in Education Award at WCNY Studios. The Exploratory course, which is outlined below, was chosen for the award for the creative and innovative design that is offered to our 7th grade students. Two of our Exploratory teachers chose two students to go to WCNY studios to share their personal experiences within the Exploratory Course. CHS Students Selected to Perform in New York Conference All-State Music Ensemble CHS Students Selected to Perform in New York Conference All-State Music Ensemble: The Cazenovia High School Music Department is pleased to announce that CCSD students Ethan Coburn and Elijah Gebers have been selected to participate in the New York Conference All-State Music Ensemble. The students rehearsed with esteemed conductors and other top student musicians from throughout New York State during the annual Winter Conference of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) held December 1-4 in Rochester, NY. Cazenovia girls take 5th at NYSPHSAA State Championships Cazenovia girls take 5th at NYSPHSAA State Championships: The Cazenovia girls cross country team capped a historic season of competition for the program with a fifth-place finish at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Championship Meet on November 12 at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill. The Lady Lakers scored 147 points to finish fifth in a competitive field that featured the Class C champions from every section in NYS, plus the top five individual runners from each section. East Aurora, the defending Class B champion, earned another state title with a total of 53 points. Sophomore Olivia Ruddy earned her 14th first-place finish for the team in 14 races this season with a personal course record performance of 21:01.8 to capture 27th in the state. Business Leadership Students Take Lead in 5th & 6th Grade Mentoring Program Business Leadership Students Take Lead in 5th & 6th Grade Mentoring Program: The Business Leadership Class has been busy this semester!  Students are taking the lead in a 5th and 6th grade mentoring program, Rippleton Center visits and learning to ace an interview with the help of Mr. DiFulvio, Mr. Linck, Mr. Byrnes, Mrs. Littlepage and Mr. Oldfield.  They also mastered Public Speaking on the big stage and rocked Team Adventure learning to work as a team with the importance of attitude and communication!   
Smart Schools Investment Plan Smart Schools Investment Plan: Preliminary Smart Schools Investment Plan - Phase 3 (Revised) November 2022 To date we have committed $677,009 of the $813,516 allotted to our district through the Smart Schools Bond Act.  Phase 1 (2016) consisted of technology infrastructure and building security upgrades totaling $316,650.  Phase 2 (2017) involved the purchase of new computers, chromebooks and projectors to support our students and staff, totaling $360,359.  A total of $136,507 remains for Phase 3.  Phase 3 purchasing under this grant will support the needs identified by the District related to installing high-speed broadband or enhancing wireless connectivity.  Phase 3 will also support learning technology equipment.  This equipment includes but is not limited to: ...
Cazenovia Wins Sectionals and Advances to the NYSPHSAA Championship Cazenovia Wins Sectionals and Advances to the NYSPHSAA Championship: Last week, the Cazenovia cross country girls saved their best team effort of the season thus far for the moment that mattered most: the sectional championship race.  Their merited performance earned them a thrilling victory over two talented opponents, as the Lakers scored 48 points to claim victory over defending champion South Jefferson and Adirondack’s teams for the program’s fourth Section 3 title. From the start, the entire squad sprinted from the start line, determined to avoid the slower start that cost them extra effort working through the field at the league championship meet. CCSD Now Hiring: Substitute Bus Drivers and Attendants CCSD Now Hiring: Substitute Bus Drivers and Attendants: Cazenovia Central School District is seeking qualified candidates for substitute bus driver and substitute bus attendants. Positions can result in full-time employment!   School bus drivers must hold a NYS class A or B drivers license with air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements. Training is offered on sight to obtain the proper class license and endorsements.  Pay rate for drivers is $24/hr.     If interested, please contact Karen Cowherd at kcowherd@caz.centric.org . 
New mural created at Burton Street Elementary to Inspire Students New mural created at Burton Street Elementary to Inspire Students: As the new school year approaches, students and families alike will notice a new mural on a wall at Burton Street Elementary School to welcome them into the new year. The mural is the product of student ideas combined with the artistic talents of Katie McGinnis, a library media specialist and artist. Principal Kara May said the work on this started as last school year was coming to close. Students were asked to submit ideas that could be turned into a new mural at their school. “We started the process in early June and had entries due in mid-June, so we could disclose the winning design before school was dismissed for the summer,” she said. “We set up a committee to evaluate the designs that consisted of myself, Katie McGinnis, library media specialist ...
AP English Language Students Dive into Local History While Honing ELA Skills AP English Language Students Dive into Local History While Honing ELA Skills: This year, AP English Language classes took a deep dive into the topic of local history and abolition as they honed their skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, the four ELA standards. Our unit on Cazenovia's pivotal role in the Fugitive Slave Law Convention of 1850 that was held here has been in development since Covid hit Caz CSD in the Spring of 2020.  As AP English classes tried to cope with the constraints of the pandemic by finding creative avenues to learning, we began this unit studying Caz's history and involvement in abolition.   Along the way, classes have read and studied Frederick Douglass's first  Narrative , have traveled to the Gerrit Smith Estate in Peterboro to hear abolition expert Norm Dann and ...
CCSD Students Compete in the MOST's Steamboat STEM Challenge CCSD Students Compete in the MOST's Steamboat STEM Challenge: On Saturday, October 15th, three 4th grade groups and one 5th grade group competed in the MOST's Steam Boat Science competition.  Group members included these students from Mr. Smith's and Mrs. Hotchkiss's 4th grade classes: (pictured) Junior Division 4th place finishers; Emma McDowell, Margaret Alton, Mattox Tinkham and Jedd Bjork.  Other teams who participated were Gavin Tietje, Matt Etringer, Nate Etringer as well as a 5th grade team with Greyson Fountain and Sam Schofield.  There was a lot of learning in the weeks leading up to the competition and fun was had by all that morning!

Maggie Dougherty Recognized as Music Educator Award Honoree Maggie Dougherty Recognized as Music Educator Award Honoree: Classic FM host Bruce Paulsen visited Cazenovia High School to surprise their very first Music Educator Award honoree, our very own Maggie Dougherty!   As part of Classic FM’s 50th Anniversary celebration, the station created this new award, spotlighting local music educators in our community, and honoring those who are dedicated to sustaining the performing arts and maintain a strong positive influence on their students.   Next week, Classic FM will air a recorded performance from Ms. Dougherty's Cazenovia High School Chamber Choir. The performance will air LIVE on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 12 Noon. Be sure to tune in to hear this outstanding group of Lakers!
