Athletic Placement Process
The New York State Education Department and the Cazenovia Central School District participate in the advancement program known as Athletic Placement Process or A.P.P. (formerly known as Selection Classification). This is the formal process by which students in grades 7 and 8 can become eligible to participate on junior varsity or varsity level athletic teams despite the fact they have not yet reached the 9th grade eligibility requirement. This process at CCSD is intended to be used rarely and is only intended for students who are rated as exceptional, unusually gifted or elite. Experience does not necessarily correlate to exceptionality. Very good athletes with large amounts of high level experience are often not permitted to go through this process. The District’s Medical Director must approve any student to be allowed to participate in this process. The athletic department firmly believes that participation at the grade level is a critical time in a beginning athlete’s personal development, especially when it relates to leadership skills and social development. Please consider all aspects of the sport, not just skills, competition, and athleticism, prior to pursuing junior varsity and/or varsity eligibility as a 7th or 8th grader through an A.P.P. application.
Please review 100% of the document attached below if you are interested in applying to go through this process. After reading all of the reference materials and directions, please contact Mr. Mike Byrnes, Athletic Administrator at (315) 655-1358 if you have further questions. Applicants should send in materials at least 4-weeks prior to the start date for the upper level team and should speak to the coach of that team prior to applying.
