THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR

Every student at Cazenovia High School is assigned a school counselor based upon their grade level and last name.

Please note, our counseling configuration has changed as follows:

Ms. Bobbey McCarthy:  Grades 7-9, A-Z  /  bmccarthy@caz.cnyric.org
Mr. Robert Oldfield:  Grades 10-12, A-K  /  roldfield@caz.cnyric.org
Ms. Britt Zumpano:   Grades 10-12, L-Z  /  bzumpano@caz.cnyric.org
Mrs. Melissa Forrett:  Registrar, Counseling Assistant  /  mforrett@caz.cnyric.org

The Counseling Department’s philosophy is one of collaboration to ease the transition from Middle School to High School and counselor to counselor. We use a teamwork approach to ensure that every student’s needs are being met.

The role of a school counselor may differ from district to district. At Cazenovia High School, the school counselor works with students on:

  • Academic Support
  • Career Counseling
  • College Applications
  • College Search Process
  • Course Selection
  • Family Consultation
  • Graduation Requirements
  • Personal Issues
  • Resume Writing
  • Scheduling
  • Special Programs

From time to time, there are situations that require more in-depth and frequent counseling. Students and families may be referred to an outside agency.

COUNSELING OFFICE HOURS

During the academic school year, the Counseling Office will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Fridays.

Summer hours are 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office is closed from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch.

*Please note that the counselors work ten days during the summer. Please call to make an appointment, or leave a message with Melissa Forrett, the Counseling Office assistant, as the counselors check in periodically to retrieve messages. E-mail is also a great way to communicate with your student’s counselor.

HOW DO I SEE MY COUNSELOR?

Counselors are available during regular school hours every day and at other times upon request. We can be reached at 315-655-5301.

Students can make appointments with their respective counselor through Mrs. Forrett, who will issue the student a pass for their scheduled time (during study halls or lunch periods, whenever possible, to avoid missing core classes). Counselors often initiate an appointment with a student by sending a pass through homeroom.

In the event of an emergency in which the student needs to see a counselor immediately, please be sure to make this clear to Mrs. Forrett. If your counselor is not available, one of the other counselors will assist you.

PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT CONFERENCES

Communication between parents, teachers, and students is essential. We parents to speak directly to a teacher(s) either on the phone or through e-mail before requesting a conference. However, if a conference with the student’s teacher(s) is deemed necessary by the counselor, the parent, or a teacher, a conference will be arranged. Meeting times are generally held before school (7:30 a.m.). Parents interested in meeting individually with only one teacher are encouraged to contact that teacher directly.
